Interior Design Tips for First-Time Homeowners

Jun 13, 2022 | First Time Home Buyer

Being able to create a comfortable, cozy living space is one of the joys of being a homeowner. Sometimes, when you rent, you’re restricted to what you can do to personalize your space because the landlord has rules against painting, putting nails into walls, etc. However, when you own your home, there are no rules – you get to make all the decisions! As a first-time homeowner, you may be unsure about where to start when it comes to interior design. Below, we’ve shared some basic design tips to help you get started.

3 Basic Interior Design Tips for New Homeowners

During the buying process, when you did your walk-through, you probably made some mental notes of things you would change in your home. Now that the place is officially yours, you can start bringing all those unique ideas to life! Check out these interior design tips for first-time homeowners:

Tip #1: Make a Plan

Perhaps you have some remodeling to do. That’s okay, but before you get started with decorating your interior, you’ll want to make a plan

Think about what changes you’ll be making to your home. Are you planning on knocking down a wall, replacing cabinets, or re-tiling your bathroom? If so, you may want to hold off on decorating these areas until you know exactly what your plans may be. For example, you don’t want to spend money on paint if you’re just going to take out the wall anyway.

Before you start buying, take measurements, plan ahead, and don’t forget to consider the big picture.

Tip #2: Take Your Time

One of the most common mistakes that first-time homeowners run into is not taking their time. Rushing into a project is a good way to waste money. Before you start buying, take some time to get to know your home. Sure, you may be stuck with your old sofa for a week or two. But this will give you an idea of what type and size of furniture you want to replace it with.

Remember, there’s no rush. You just bought the home and chances are, you’ll be living in it for some time.

Tip #3: Find Your Inspiration

Today, homeowners have an endless amount of resources at their fingertips when it comes to interior design. We recommend taking advantage of them!

Don’t be afraid to look around on Pinterest and Instagram to see what other homeowners and professionals are doing with their space. You may find something that inspires you or even something you want to replicate entirely.

There are a lot of talented, creative designers out there. And even professionals look at other people’s work. You would be missing out if you didn’t allow yourself the opportunity to explore and look at all the possibilities.
