Lead-based paint is another common issue, especially in homes built before regulations changed in the late 1970s. If an appraiser observes peeling, chipping, or cracking paint, it must be corrected. This typically means repainting or sealing the area to prevent lead exposure.

Asbestos, often found in insulation, flooring, or ceilings in older homes, is not automatically disqualifying. However, if it appears damaged or presents a health risk, the VA may require remediation. Any necessary work must be performed by licensed professionals and verified before final loan approval.
