Buying a Home with a VA Loan: Grants for Disabled Veterans

Jun 4, 2021 | VA Loans

Homes are bought and sold every day. Buying a house with a VA-backed loan is no exception. If you are a disabled Veteran, you should consider a VA loan for your next home purchase. VA loans can help you get the home of your dreams with more options for veterans than traditional loans offer.

Grants for Disabled Veterans

Grants are available for disabled Vets who are looking to buy, build or modify their current homes to make them more accessible.

Specially Adapted Housing Grants, or SAH grants, are available to Veterans who meet specific requirements.

You will need to own your home or intend to buy a house and have a qualifying disability connected to military service, including:

  •   Severe Burns
  •   Blindness in both eyes
  •   Loss of use or total loss of more than one limb
  •   Loss of one lower extremity after September 11, 2001; one that leaves you unable to walk or stand without the help of a wheelchair, braces, or crutches

How much can I get from a SAH Grant?

These grants can allow you up to $100,896 for the fiscal year of 2021. This is the current maximum allowed under the SAH grant. Keep in mind that you don’t need to use it all at once. You are able to use money from this grant up to six times as required.

What if I Live with a Family Member Until I Purchase a Home?

There are also grants available to alter a home until you purchase your own. Temporary Residence Adaptation, or TRA grants, can be used if you qualify for a SAH grant and temporarily live with a family member who needs to alter their home to meet your needs. This includes adding ramps.

If you qualify for the SAH grant, you can receive up to $40,637 for the fiscal year of 2021.
